Pyongyang Slams US Allegations Over Massive Crypto Heist

2 min read

North Korean officials have fired back at accusations that the state was responsible for a record breaking 6.3 billion dollar heist targeting the cryptocurrency exchange Binance. Kim Yo jong, a powerful figure in the regime and sister to leader Kim Jong Un, dismissed the claims on Tuesday as a sinister attempt by the United States to tarnish her country’s global reputation. She characterized the allegations as a trite provocation, arguing that Washington is intentionally misleading international public opinion by blaming Pyongyang for cyber crimes across the globe.

The denial comes after a coordinated effort by the FBI, the Secret Service, and various cybersecurity analysts who identified a state backed hacking collective known as TraderTraitor as the culprit. Investigators believe North Korea has increasingly relied on high stakes digital theft to bypass international sanctions and fund its struggling economy. While Pyongyang maintains it resolutely opposes malicious activity in cyberspace, independent think tanks suggest the country has spent years systematically building an elite army of hackers recruited from top universities and managed by national intelligence agencies.

For its part, Binance has remained relatively quiet regarding the geopolitical finger pointing, focusing instead on how the security breach actually happened. The exchange revealed that early investigations pointed toward a compromised engineer laptop, which provided attackers with a backdoor to execute unauthorized withdrawals. Despite the scale of the loss, Binance stated it has already recovered or covered roughly 95 percent of the stolen assets and promised that users would not bear the financial burden of the attack.

As trading resumes on the platform following efforts to freeze impacted assets, federal authorities continue to urge industry partners to stay vigilant. The FBI has specifically asked other firms in the crypto space to help track and block any transactions tied to accounts associated with TraderTraitor. This latest clash underscores a growing shadow war between Western intelligence agencies and North Korean operatives over billions of dollars in digital currency.
